My ordeal in the hands of Comptroller-General of Prisons is a reflection of who he is – Hon. Mrakpor
Member representing Aniocha/Oshimili federal constituency of Delta State
and Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Science and Technology, Hon.
Joan Onyemaechi Mrakpor has described the alleged assault on her by a
security detail of Comptroller-General of Prisons, Mr. Peter Ezenwa
Elendu, on the
premises of National Assembly as a reflection of who the Comptroller is.
In an exclusive interview with DAILY POST in Abuja, Hon. Mrakpor expressed shock at the manner the incident occurred in the presence of Comptroller-General of Prisons himself without calling the officers to order. She said, the behaviour showed the extent with which Nigerians were suffering in the hands of less privileged ones, while urging Nigerians to stand up for their rights, especially against similar abuses.
“I will take up the matter, because if this could happen in the premises of the National Assembly, you will imagine the impunity against the larger society because poor people may not have a voice even if they were abused, ” she noted.
Ruling out the possibility of the officer overzealously acting on his own, the lawmaker insisted that the CGP was not different from who his officers are, stating that there were enough laws that would try the man for breach of her fundamental human rights.

” The incident happened right in the premises of the National
Assembly which you know has two lanes. It was on Thursday when I
attempted to use the other free lane while rushing for an assignment
outside. A vehicle in the long convoy overran me and stopped us. The man
in Prisons uniform came down shouting on my driver and when wining down
to find out what was the problem, he slapped me on the face and uttered
‘you useless prostitute, you don’t understand convoy?, ” she explained.
Threatening to seek redress to serve as warning to others, the
lawmaker stated that it was only a privilege for one to be in an
executive position in the society, emphasising that her human right has
been breached.“I will take up the matter, because if this could happen in the premises of the National Assembly, you will imagine the impunity against the larger society because poor people may not have a voice even if they were abused, ” she noted.

“There is no need making laws with regards to what happened to me
at the premises of National Assembly, we have enough laws and I believe
Justice will prevail at the end of the day, ” she maintained.
