Police dismiss cop for collecting N50,000 bribe

 A police sergeant, Daniel Osaimayu, has been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly collecting N50,000 bribe from motorists in the Oshodi area of Lagos State. Our correspondent gathered that Osaimayu, who was attached to the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, Alausa, was arrested on Monday by the X-Squad of the Lagos State Police Command.  Our correspondent learnt that the X-Squad operatives had arrested a hoodlum in the area and found the cash on him. The hoodlum, however, fingered the police sergeant, who was posted to the area, as his accomplice.  The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who confirmed the dismissal on Wednesday, said four other policemen were dismissed for extortion and improper dressing. Buhari extends stay in London till Sunday

President Muhammadu Buhari will not return to Nigeria from London, where he is spending his 10-day medical vacation, until Sunday. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo disclosed this to State House correspondents on Thursday shortly before the commencement of a meeting of the National Economic Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Buhari’s 10-day vacation expired on Wednesday. By the time he would be arriving in Nigeria on Sunday, he would have spent 14 days. He was earlier scheduled to arrive the country on Thursday. Osinbajo however said it was just appropriate for Buhari to take the weekend off and rest very well in London before returning to the country. He said he had spoken to the President on the telephone and he was in good health condition. The Vice-President said Buhari would resume in his office on Monday morning. The Leader of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, Chief Solomon Chukwu, has said there is no affiliation between members of MASSOB and the Niger Delta Avengers. Chukwu, who spoke to our correspondent on Thursday through his National Director of Information, Mr. Sunday Okereafor, said that while the Avengers were armed, MASSOB members were not and non-violent. Chukwu said MASSOB was not supportive of the activities of the Avengers, describing their actions as ill, obnoxious and nefarious. He said, “Avengers are militants. Their philosophy, ideology, concept, mission and vision  are quite extraneous from MASSOB.”

PDP crisis: Rival groups of protesters clash at Hqtrs

Supporters of the Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee and their counterparts from the Ali Modu Sheriff group on Thursday clashed at the party headquarters. The incident occurred at about 1:04pm. Trouble began when Sheriff’s supporters tried to dislodge Makarfi’s supporters from the main entrance of Wadata Plaza, the complex housing the party secretariat. Armed with sticks and clubs, the rival groups defied the rains to continue their supremacy tussle. A verbal exchange between the two groups soon degenerated into fisticuffs and an exchange of missiles. In the end, one person was left with a deep cut on his forehead as pro-Makarfi protesters held their ground. Makarfi’s supporters were the first to arrive at the secretariat as early as about 6:30am singing and drumming, while their rivals arrived shortly after at about 7:12am. Flood sacks churches, destroys properties in Ekiti

Residents and shop owners at Adere, along Ilawe road, are lamenting following the flood that ravaged the place on Wednesday and sacked no fewer than three churches. The rain which began about 2pm on Wednesday, lasted for four hours. One of the residents, Pastor Abioye Emmanuel, expressed sadness over the level of destruction caused by the flood. He said, “The water flowing from NTA, Aba-Iyamedi, Egbewa and Falegan all met here, at this particular point. This channel is too narrow for the volume of water flowing through it. The only solution is for the government to expand the channel that passes through this bridge for easy flow of water. A member of the Christ and Grace Deliverance Ministry, Ayodele Adekola, lamented that the flood did not allow them to observe the usual vigil as water took over the whole place. 16-year-old boy jailed 10 years for rape, murder

An Indonesian court has sentenced a 16-year-old boy to 10 years in prison on Thursday over the rape and murder of a woman. The boy, who reportedly acted with two other men, was found guilty of killing the 18-year-old woman by assaulting her with a hoe after raping her in a dormitory outside Jakarta in May. The other two suspects, aged 24, will face trial later. The father of the convicted boy said he would appeal, saying his son was at home when the crime took place. “Even if it’s only a day in prison, we will appeal, let alone 10 years,” his father Nahrudin said. It was the second rape and murder case in Indonesia to attract nationwide attention this year. Last month, a court on Sumatra Island sentenced seven teenagers to 10 years in prison each for raping and murdering a 14-year-old girl in April.

The Christian Association of Nigeria has insisted Christian pupils will continue to wear church  garments and other apparels to public schools if Muslim students continued wearing hijab. Banks grumble as Bayelsa civil servants can’t repay loans

The decision by Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, to pay civil servants half of their April salaries in cash and cheques has drawn the anger of some banks in the state, it has been learnt. Investigation has revealed that instead of paying the civil servants through their various bank accounts, Dickson opted for cash and cheque payment. The development, it was learnt, was apparently to avoid deductions of workers’ financial liabilities by their various banks. Bayelsa State has been in the throes of hardship due to the inability of the government to pay backlog of salaries it owed different categories of workers in the state. The government is owing civil servants five months, local government workers about 13 months and pensioners about eight months. The trial of erstwhile Chairman of DAAR Communications Plc., Mr Raymond Dokpesi, at the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday suffered another setback following the absence of the prosecuting counsel, Mr Rotimi Jacobs(SAN) in court. Dokpesi is being tried by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commissions over an alleged N2.1bn fraud. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the case had suffered several adjournments at the instance of the prosecution. At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, the defence counsel, Mr Ifedayo Adedipe, informed the court that Jacobs was absent in court. Adedipe told the court that Jacobs had sent a message to inform the defence team that he was scheduled to appear in another case at the Appeal Court on the same day. Scores of students of the Tai Solarin College of Education, Omu Ijebu, Ogun State, on Wednesday, stormed the Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, protesting the alleged non-payment of 14-month salaries of their lecturers. The students who came in three buses, were armed with placards which bore various inscriptions such as: ‘ Amosun save TASCE from extinction , ‘Lectures are not going on in TASCE,’ ‘Amosun restore education at TASCE’ and ‘Please we students are suffering in TASCE’ among others. Very hot drinks may cause cancer – UN

Drinking very hot beverages “probably” causes cancer of the oesophagus, the UN’s cancer agency said Wednesday, while lifting suspicion from coffee and the herbal drink mate if consumed at “normal serving temperatures”. “These results suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of oesophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinks themselves, that appears to be responsible,” said Christopher Wild, director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). EFCC raids Obanikoro’s homes as agency invites Sheriff

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday stormed the Lagos homes of former Minister Musiliu Obanikoro and carted away cars and other valuables. The two homes raided were the former minister’s private residence at Park View Estate as well as the house near Banana Island, where his two sons – Jide and Gbolahan – live with the families. It was learnt that the officials, who allegedly stormed the two houses in the afternoon, were said to have been there till about 6pm. According to Obanikoro’s media aide, Jonathan Eze, the EFFC officials took vehicles, wristwatches and other effects of the former minister and his sons, who are all in the United States (U.S.). Abuja quack doctor arrested after 10 years’ practice

The police have arrested a suspected quack doctor, Victor Akpan, in the Gwarinpa area of Abuja. PUNCH Metro learnt that Akpan, who had been running a private hospital for 10 years, allegedly operated with forged and stolen certificates. As a quack doctor, he was said to have performed caesarean sections, removed fibroids and delivered pregnant women of babies. His arrest came exactly one year after the arrest of a senior medical officer with the Federal Ministry of Health, Martins Ugwu, by the police for practising as a medical doctor with stolen certificates for over nine years. A security guard with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Awobola Babatunde, has been arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the defendant was alleged to have opened a bank account in the name of the General Overseer of the church, Pastor E.A. Adeboye. The accused, 32, whose address is unknown, is facing a four count of stealing, impersonation, conspiracy, and attempting to fraudulently cash a cheque of N600,000. He pleaded not guilty to the charges. According to the prosecutor, Insp. Aighoi Gbemileke, the accused, with others at large, committed the offences on June 6 on Redemption Way, Ebute Meta, at 9am. He said the accused stole a Fidelity Bank cheque valued at N600,000 belonging to Adeboye. “The accused falsely presented himself as Pastor Adeboye by opening a savings account at Aguda, Surulere branch of Fidelity Bank in his (Adeboye) name. “He opened the account in order to

The Nigeria Peace Corps, Osun State Command, has arrested a 26-year-old suspected fake soldier, Sulaimon Tajudeen, who confessed to have made N137,000 from selling fake recruitment forms. PUNCH Metro learnt that Tajudeen was arrested in the Oke-Baale area of Osogbo, the state capital. Our correspondent gathered on Tuesday that the suspect claimed he served at a cantonment in the Ojo area of Ibadan, Oyo State. It was learnt that Tajudeen allegedly sold fake recruitment forms to one Oladapo and obtained N27,500. He also allegedly obtained N13,500 each from two other victims; N36,000, N15,000 and N4,000 from three others. Tajudeen said he had wanted to become a soldier. “I did this to find a means of livelihood. I sold fake army recruitment forms and made N137,000 from the victims,” he added. Dispatch rider dies in Third Mainland Bridge crash

A yet-to-be-identified dispatch rider has been killed after ramming his motorcycle into a stationary truck at the Oworonshoki end of the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos State.  PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim, who rode a Bajaj motorcycle, with number plate XR 190 LSR, was returning home from work around 7pm on Monday when tragedy struck. ALagos-based businessman, Kehinde Akintoye, has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over a N5.6m dud cheque allegedly issued to him by a former Commissioner of Police in Akure, Ondo State, Joseph Rugbere. In the petition, dated March 23, 2016, and sent to the agency through his lawyer, Daniel Omakor, Akintoye also accused one Bada of conspiring with the ex-CP to defraud him of the sum. Akintoye, the Managing Director of Kennimus Oil and Gas Limited, said he had through Bada supplied 33,000 litres of diesel worth N5.6m to the ex-CP in Akure. He said a Guaranty Trust Bank cheque bearing the name of Rugbere Walter Joseph, dated March 26, 2013, was issued to his company upon the delivery of the fuel on March 23 at a filling station in Akure. A 34-year-old man, Lucky Onofua, has been arrested in the Egbeda area of Lagos State after he allegedly posed as a Squadron Leader of the Nigerian Air Force and beat up a policewoman, who was controlling traffic. Our correspondent gathered that Onofua allegedly beat up the female sergeant, whose name had yet to be known, for stopping his Sport Utility Vehicle at an intersection in Egbeda on Monday. It was gathered that in the commotion that ensued, the sergeant held onto the clothes of the fake officer. Dispatch rider killed in Lagos accident

A dispatch rider on Monday night died on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos, after ramming his motor bike into a stationary truck. The accident occurred at 7:20pm while the man was returning from Lagos Island. The unnamed man, until his death, was a dispatch rider at Olowu Spare parts market. He reportedly rammed his motor bike into the truck marked XR190LSR and died on the spot. Confirming the accident, the state police command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said policemen attached to Oworonshoki division took the man to hospital where he was confirmed dead.   “We learnt that the man has a daughter and has been divorced from his wife. He body has been deposited at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary, Yaba,” she said.

After three failed attempts, the former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ali Sheriff, at 1:01pm on Monday gained entry into the national secretariat of the party. The ex-chairman had early in the morning made spirited attempts to go into the party premises to resume work as chairman. He was, however, restrained from doing so by a detachment of regular and riot policemen as well as officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. Some students of Baptist High School, Adeeke, Iwo caused a stir among their colleagues as they appeared in the school in choir robes and other church garments. Our correspondent, who visited the school observed that the students came late to the school around 8:35 on Tuesday and headed to their various classes as their colleagues hailed them for their courage. Many female Muslim students of the school wore hijab on their uniforms and some members of the Christian Association of Nigeria are in the school to monitor the reaction of the teachers to the mode of dressing of their children. OJB Jezreel dies at 49

Nigerian music producer and singer, Babatunde Okungbowa, popularly known as OJB Jezreel has been reported dead. A family source told The PUNCH the artist behind such hits as Searching and Pretete died at his home in Lagos. The source said OJB had a relapse about two weeks ago and had to be placed on dialysis, which cost N35,000 weekly. His situation worsened on Monday leading to his death today. Multiple sources are also reporting that the music producer died from complications following the kidney transplant surgery he had about two years ago. Shopkeeper kills Lagos motorcyclist over bottled water

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old shopkeeper, Ekanem Enodan, for allegedly killing a commercial motorcyclist, Goddonu Nicolas, during an altercation in Oke-Ira in the Ogba area of the state. Our correspondent gathered that the 46-year-old was killed over a bottle of water he picked from Enodan’s shop on Ajayi Road, Oke-Ira. It was learnt that the suspect allegedly hit Nicolas with the bottled water on the chest, saying he took it without his permission. Our correspondent gathered that the victim fell and became unconscious, after which he was rushed to the Ifako-Ijaiye General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead. A 25-year-old man, Kabir Ahmed, has been admitted to the Federal Medical Centre in Yola, Adamawa State, after he was allegedly beaten into a coma by some policemen attached to the Doubeli division. The policemen, who were said to be in mufti, had on May 16 at about 10am raided Zanranda Street in the Jimeta area of the state to arrest some suspected smokers. PUNCH Metro learnt that the cops searched the people they met on the street and arrested one of them found with cannabis. They reportedly wanted to apprehend others when Ahmed, who was in front of his house, cautioned the cops not to arrest “innocent” persons. The police in Ogun State have arrested a hairdresser, Kudirat Oyediran, for allegedly inflicting injuries on her stepdaughter, Rachael Oyediran. It was learnt that 32-year-old Kudirat allegedly tortured the five-year-old for bed-wetting and disobedience. Kudirat and Rachael live in Okeore, Atan Ota, in the Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area of the state. The mother of one was apprehended after a neighbour reported the alleged torture to the police at the Onipanu division. PUNCH Metro gathered that Rachael’s mother died five years ago when she was three months old. She was said to have been under the care of the suspect, whom her father married a few years after. A 38-year-old trader, Mrs. Caroline Akanwa, has been arrested by the Area C Police Command, Lagos State, for allegedly battering her niece, Chioma Uneneme. PUNCH Metro learnt that Akanwa had in 2015 brought the 10-year-old from Okofia, Anambra State, to the Iponri Police Barracks, where she lived with her police husband and two children. The victim was said to have assisted with the house chores, as well as the management of Akanwa’s recharge cards business. Our correspondent was told that the suspect, however, always flogged Uneneme for every offence till her back was marred with sores. On one of such occasions, the victim was said to have been battered for allegedly selling a recharge card of N1,000 for N970.
