Varsity graduate killed by cultist in Imo

The police in Imo state have confirmed the identity of a fresh graduate of Imo state University, Owerri (IMSU), who was murdered by fleeing gunmen on Tuesday. The police confirmed his identity to be Obrin Ibekwe, a newly graduated student who was doing his clearance in preparation for the mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Ibekwe was found dead in a gutter at the back gate area of the University around 2:5pm Tuesday. The police who said that they have condoned off the area, have evacuated his lifeless body to the morgue, while investigation has been launched to ascertain the reason for the killing.

Court jails film director seven years over rape

An Indian court on Thursday sentenced a Bollywood director to seven years in jail for raping an American research scholar last year, the victim’s lawyer said. Mahmood Farooqui, best known for co-directing the popular 2010 satire “Peepli Live” on farmer suicides, was convicted on Saturday after a fast-track court in New Delhi found him guilty of the March 2015 attack. The victim, then aged 35, had travelled to India to seek Farooqui’s assistance with her research when the assault took place at his home in an upscale area of the capital. “The court sentenced him to seven years (of imprisonment), which is the minimum jail term for this offence,” the victim’s lawyer, Vrinda Grover, told AFP. Grover, who had argued for the maximum term of life imprisonment, said the court had also imposed a 50,000 rupee ($747) fine. Farooqui, who pleaded not guilty, was taken into custody at the weekend. Man, 43, remanded in prison for raping mother

An Egor Magistrates’ Court in Benin, on Thursday, remanded one Humphrey Omoregieva, 43, in prison over alleged assault on his parents. The prosecutor, Cpl. Ayo Augustine, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Aug. 1, at No. 294, Upper Mission, Benin. Augustine told the court that the accused had beaten up his father by hitting him with a piece of wood on his forehead. He said that the accused also beat up his mother and raped her several times. The prosecutor added that the accused maliciously damaged a sliding window in the house valued at N80,000. He said that the offence contravened sections 355, 320 and 358 of the Criminal Code. The Chief Magistrate, Mr F.E. Akhere, said that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the case and ordered that copy of the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice. He adjourned the case till September 8, for mention.

Man on trial for stealing chickens

A 46-year-old man, Oyelami Tajudeen was on Thursday arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrates Court for alleged theft of N1.2 million chickens. The prosecutor, Insp. Adegoke Taiwo told the court that the accused person committed the offence sometimes between May and July at Erin Osun area, Osogbo. Taiwo said the accused had refused to pay for the chickens sold to him on credit by one Mrs Dorcas Ajibola. He said it took the intervention of the Police to apprehend the accused. Taiwo said the offence committed contravened sections 427 of the criminal code cap. 34 vol.11 Laws of Osun, 2003. The accused person pleaded not guilty to the one count charge of theft. Counsel to the accused, Mr Maruf Adediran, prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms. The Magistrate, Mrs Fatimoh Sodamade granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 and two sureties in like sum. Sodamade said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction,

Aisha Buhari visits US weeks after Fayose’s allegation

The wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha, has visited the United States, where she said she got a warm reception. Photos posted on her Facebook page shows the wife of the President at the airport, receiving a bouquet of flowers from a girl and posing for photos with Nigerians carrying the country’s flag. Details about her visit as still sketchy, but it comes less than two months after the Ekiti State Governor accused her of refusing to visit the United States because she was wanted for corruption there. The governor had while reacting to the freezing of his bank accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission argued that the first lady was involved in the Haliburton scandal. The wife of the President, who denied the allegations, had through her counsel, Mary Ekpere & Co., written a letter dated June 22, 2016, to the governor demanding a retraction of the statement. She threatened a legal action if the retraction was not made within five days
