The Borno State Government on Friday announced the death of Alhaji Shettima Ali-Monguno a former Minister of Mines, Power and Petroleum. Alhaji Jidda Shuwa the Secretary to the State Government, who announced this in a statement in Maiduguri, said the elder statesman died on Friday in Maiduguri “It is with a deep sense of loss and profound sadness that we announce, on behalf of His Excellency the Executive Governor of Borno State and the Borno State Government, the passage of our father and distinguished Statesman, Alhaji (Dr.) Shettima Ali Monguno. Police arrest alleged rapist, armed robbers in Nasarawa

The Nasarawa State Police Command on Friday arrested a 24-year-old man alleged to have committed rape and 10 suspected armed robbers in the state. Parading the suspects at the state Police Command in Lafia, the state capital, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Lawal Shehu, said Arigwu Stephen, 24, was arrested for allegedly raping a girl, Blessing Amos, in Yar-kede village, Keffi Local Government Area. Narrating his daughter’s ordeal to our correspondent in Lafia, the father of the victim, Mr. Amos Embubushiki, said that in November 2015, his daughter complained of stomach pain and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, where doctors diagnosed her and discovered that she had been raped over two years before. “I got to know that my daughter was raped over two years ago after the doctor’s report,” he said. 40 suspected cultists arrested over Ogun killings

No fewer than 40 suspects have been arrested in different parts of Ogun State by the police over the killings carried out by cultists at Igode and Fakale communities, in Sagamu Local Government Area of the state, on Wednesday. The suspects were said to have been arrested in Sagamu, Ijebu Igbo, Emuren, and Ago Iwoye. PUNCH Metro had reported that some Aye cult members had laid siege to Igode and Fakale communities on Wednesday, killing no fewer than 11 persons to commemorate the anniversary. It was reported that the cultists had gone for a rival group, Eiye Confraternity, but killed innocent residents in the melee. They were said to have inscribed “7/7” on their victims’ heads as a sign of the celebration. The masked hoodlums on motorcycles, reportedly from Emuren, a neighbouring community, had killed three welders returning from a worksite, before proceeding to Fakale, where they opened fire on a crowd watching a football match at a viewing centre.

64-year-old woman dupes company of N3m

A 64-year-woman, Iyabo Adeoti, was on Friday arraigned at the Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for duping a company of N3m. According to the News Agency of Nigeria , Adeoti, a trader, who lives at No. 6, Old Otta Road, Alagbado, Lagos, is now facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining under false pretence. The prosecutor, Clifford Ogu, told the court that the offences were committed on May 10, 2016 on AIT Road, Alagbado, Lagos. Ogu said that the accused sold a landed property she never owned to a company, Aina Gold Estate Management, for N3m. “When the company was about to take possession of the property, it was discovered that the accused was not the owner. All efforts to collect the money failed and the accused was apprehended,” he said. He added that the offences contravened Sections 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger on Saturday paraded three suspects who were caught with a human head. Mr Philip Ayuba, the Commandant of NSCDC in the state, told newsmen in Minna that the suspects were arrested in Mokwa Local Government Area of the state. He said that the suspects aged 34, 35 and 24 hail from Ekpa village in Mokwa. “I invited you here to see three suspects that we arrested on the ground of possession of a human head. “After we arrested them, they confessed to us that they own the human head,’’ he said. Ayuba said the suspects were arrested on Thursday while negotiating the sale of the head in Mokwa. “Our personnel pretended to be bargaining with them on how much to pay before they were arrested,’’ he said. Some gunmen have abducted the monarch of Iyasan town, Oba Abiodun Oyewumi, in the Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State. It was gathered that the kidnappers entered the community through the Owena River at the boundary between Ondo and Edo states around 10.30pm on Monday. They reportedly headed for the palace of the traditional ruler, whisking him away to an unknown place. The Chairman of Irele LGA, Mr. Sanmi Elumaro, explained that the kidnappers, numbering about 10, entered the town through the waterways. He added that the kidnappers were heavily armed and none of the residents could confront them while the operation lasted. The Police Public Relations Officer, Ondo State, Mr. Femi Joseph, confirmed the abduction of the monarch, adding that the command had begun investigations into the matter. The remains of Ngozi Onyekwere, 26, a National Youth Service Corps member at the Akwa Ibom State Government House, Uyo, have been buried at her home town in Nnarambia, Ahiara, in the Ahiazu Local Government Area of Imo State. Onyekwere, an Accounting graduate from the University of Port Harcourt, who was to pass out from the national scheme in August 2016, died in a road accident at Uyo on June 23, 2016. The victim was returning from her workplace at the government house when the crash occurred. During a requiem mass at Saint Brigid’s Catholic Church, Nnarambia, Rev. Father Boniface Nwaigwe urged the congregation to always help humanity, especially those in need. An Abia State Polytechnic student, identified only as Abel, has killed the landlord of one of the students’ lodges in the Immaculate area of Aba, Abia State. PUNCH Metro learnt that Abel, a final year student of the Department of Architecture, allegedly stabbed the victim in the stomach during a disagreement at the lodge. Our correspondent was told that the landlord had ordered that no female visitor was allowed to spend the night in the lodge. The suspect was alleged to have breached the rule and was challenged by the landlord, which led to a fight between them. In the ensuing scuffle, the suspect was alleged to have grabbed a knife and stabbed the victim in the stomach, before taking to his heels. The landlord reportedly died on the spot. Container crushes seven to death in Ramadan tragedy

No fewer than seven persons were killed and 12 others injured when a 40-foot container fell off a truck in the Alakija area on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway on Wednesday. PUNCH Metro learnt that at about 7.30am, the truck, with number plate KRD 526 XP, moved from its lane to another lane and rammed into a commercial bus after its brakes failed. In the process, the container the truck was carrying fell, killing seven people and injuring 12 others. The incident happened at the Alakija bus stop. Our correspondents gathered that some commercial motorcycle riders at the bus stop were also trapped under the fallen container. Two Russian national team players have been punished by their clubs after video of them at a champagne-fuelled party in Monaco following the squad’s dismal exit from Euro 2016 sparked outrage. A US-based language instructor, Henshaw Ita, has accused the officers of the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service at the Iba Zonal Office of unlawful seizure of his vehicle documents. He said the officers had been holding on to the original copies of his vehicle licence, driving licence, MOT certificate, copies of the proof of ownership and purchase of his vehicle since January 7. The English Language instructor lamented that all efforts to retrieve the documents from the command were futile, adding that he was told the documents were missing. A company driver, Moruf Haruna, has died after he was allegedly kicked in the stomach by an officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in the Abaji area of Kogi State. PUNCH Metro learnt that 40-year-old Haruna, who worked for Vintage Transport and Logistics, was allegedly manhandled by the officer when an NDLEA team stopped his vehicle for a search in the Abaji area. Our correspondent gathered that Haruna, a father of five children, and another company driver, identified only as Fatai, had left the Ojota area of Lagos State on Friday, in two separate trucks. The drivers were said to be conveying food products to Jos, Plateau State, and Abuja, respectively. Abuja transformer explodes, kills pregnant woman, five others

There was pandemonium at the Tundunwada area of Lugbe, a satellite town in the Federal Capital Territory when a transformer exploded and electrocuted six persons, including a pregnant woman who recently moved into her house in the area. About four persons were also said to have been injured during the incident, including a six-year-old boy, Destiny Okolo, who suffered injuries on his face and left ear. PUNCH Metro learnt that the transformer was on fire for about 10 minutes during which it sent devastating electric current to some residential apartments in the area.   Our correspondent, who visited the community on Tuesday, gathered that the incident happened around 9pm on Saturday. Some gunmen have kidnapped an expatriate working on the Epe Township Expansion Project, Epe, being executed by the Lagos State Government. PUNCH Metro learnt that the expatriate, who was among the contractors from Granebury Construction Company handling the project, was kidnapped late Monday while working on the site. A source told our correspondent that the gunmen shot into the air before taking the victim away, adding that the police had already mounted aerial surveillance in the community in a bid to rescue the kidnapped contractor. “A tank has been stationed at the project site. Policemen from surrounding divisions have also mounted surveillance in the area,” he added. Abducted S’Leonean envoy rescued

The Deputy High Commissioner of Sierra Leone in Nigeria, Maj. Gen. Alfred Nelson William, who was kidnapped along Abuja- Kaduna last Friday, has regained his freedom. Willliam was rescued by the police on Tuesday and has  reunited with the High Commission and his family. The Force Public Relations, Donald Awunah, confirmed it last night in an SMS. It read, “The ambassador was released at about 16:00hrs  along Abuja- Kaduna Road. “Following credible intelligence and technical support, there was intense police activities on both land and air patrol within the area. The General is feasibly in good condition. “The acting IGP, Ibrahim Idris,  wishes to assure the members of the Diplomatic Corps and other foreign nationals of their safety and security in Nigeria.” The police however did not say if ransom was paid for the envoy’s release or not. His abductors had earlier demanded N30m ransom during negotiations with embassy officials.

Gang chops off DPO’s ear during arrest

 The Anambra State Police Command on Monday paraded a nine-man gang that had been terrorising Nanka community in Orumba North Local Government Area of the state. Members of the gang led by one Ifedilichukwu Nwankwo allegedly chopped off one of the ears of a Divisional Police Officer of Ajali Division (name withheld) who was at Nanka to effect their arrest. Parading the suspects at the State Anti-Robbery Squad office at Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ali Okechukwu, said the Nanka community had been liberated by the arrest of the gang.
